Dedication and Innovation: Two Iona Prep Students Shine at Regeneron Westchester Science & Engineering Fair

Iona Prep Students Win Regeneron Science Fair Division Awards

Two outstanding students from Iona Prep recently received division awards at the 2024 Regeneron Westchester Science & Engineering Fair. Senior Aydan Gerber and junior Mateo Del Rio Lanse showcased their exceptional work at the competition, which took place on March 16th at Somers High School. The event saw over 700 high school students from Westchester, Putnam, and Sullivan Counties participate in hands-on science and research activities.

Aydan Gerber’s project focused on developing an algorithm using Python to analyze keyword frequency and identify significant topics of discussion under the #sustainability hashtag on Twitter. His results were published by Cambridge University Press in February, demonstrating his expertise in data analysis and machine learning.

Mateo Del Rio Lanse worked on improving machine-learning rates by developing three convolutional neural networks that can screen for tumors in brain scans. His innovative approach to medical imaging technology showcased his talent for computer science and engineering.

The Regeneron Westchester Science & Engineering Fair aims to encourage students to pursue careers in STEM fields by providing a platform for high school students in Westchester, Putnam, and Sullivan Counties to showcase their work. By promoting innovation and academic excellence, the fair helps pave the way for future scientists and engineers who will shape our world with cutting-edge technology.

The top 20 projects from the competition will advance to the Regeneron International Science & Engineering Fair, where students will have the opportunity to present their research on a global stage. This international recognition further highlights the importance of fostering creativity and scientific curiosity among young minds.

Overall, Gerber’s and Del Rio Lanse’s achievements demonstrate that hard work, dedication, and innovation are key ingredients for success in science and engineering fields. Their exceptional projects inspire hope for a brighter future filled with technological advancements that will improve our lives in countless ways.
